Hymn 214

Hail the day that sees him rise, Alleluia! to his throne above the skies; Alleluia! Christ, the Lamb for sinners given, Alleluia! enters now the highest heaven! Alleluia! There for him high triumph waits; Alleluia! lift your heads, eternal gates! Alleluia! he hath conquered death and sin; Alleluia! take the King of glory in! Alleluia! Lo! the heaven its Lord receives, Alleluia! yet he loves the earth he leaves; Alleluia! though returning to his throne, Alleluia! still he calls mankind his own. Alleluia! See! he lifts his hands above; Alleluia! See! he shows the prints of love: Alleluia! Hark! his gracious lips bestow, Alleluia! blessings on his Church below. Alleluia! Still for us he intercedes, Alleluia! his prevailing death he pleads, Alleluia! near himself prepares our place, Alleluia! he the first fruits of our race. Alleluia! Lord, though parted from our sight, Alleluia! far above the starry height, Alleluia! grant our hearts may thither rise, Alleluia! seeking thee above the skies. Alleluia! There we shall with thee remain, Alleluia! partners of thy eternal reign, Alleluia! there thy face forever see, Alleluia! find our heaven of heavens in thee, Alleluia!

The Officiant begins the service with one or more of the following sentences of Scripture, or of those on pages 75-78;

or with the versicle "O God, make speed to save us" on page 117

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.    Psalm 141:2 Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth: The Lord is his name.    Amos 5:8

If I say, "Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night," darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike.    Psalm 139:10,12

The Invitatory and Psalter

All stand

Officiant

O God, make speed to save us. Alleluia!

People

O Lord, make

haste to help us.

Alleluia!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The following, or some other suitable hymn, or an Invitatory Psalm, may be sung or said.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of Life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Then follows The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 47

Omnes gentes, plaudite

1 Clap your hands, all you peoples; * shout to God with a cry of joy.

2 For the Lord Most High is to be feared; * he is the great King over all the earth.

3 He subdues the peoples under us, * and the nations under our feet.

4 He chooses our inheritance for us, * the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

5 God has gone up with a shout, * the Lord with the sound of the ram's-horn.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; * sing praises to our King, sing praises.

7 For God is King of all the earth; * sing praises with all your skill.

8 God reigns over the nations; * God sits upon his holy throne.

9 The nobles of the peoples have gathered together * with the people of the God of Abraham.

10 The rulers of the earth belong to God, * and he is highly exalted. At the end of the Psalms is sung or said Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

One or two lessons, as appointed, are read, the Reader first saying A lesson from Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. "This," he said, "is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

A citation giving chapter and verse may be added

After each Lesson the Reader may say

The Word of the Lord.

People

Thanks be to God.

Or the Reader may say    Here ends the Lesson (Reading). Silence may be kept after each Reading. One of the following Canticles, or one of those on pages 47-52, or 85-95, is sung or said after each Reading. If three lessons are used, the Lesson from the Gospel is read after the second Canticle.

Hymn 215

1 See, the Conqu'ror mounts in triumph; see the King in royal state, riding on the clouds, his chariot, to his heav'nly palace gate. Hear the choir of angel voices joyful alleluias sing, and the gates on high are opened to receive their heav'nly King.

2 Who is this that comes in glory, trumpets sound with jubilee? Lord of battles, God of armies, he has gained the victory. He who on the cross did suffer, he who from the grave arose, he has conquered sin and Satan, he by death has beat his foes.

3 You have raised our human nature on the clouds to God's right hand; there we'll sit in heav'nly places, there with you in glory stand. Jesus reigns, adored by angels, man with God is on the throne; mighty Lord, in your ascension we by faith behold our own.

A reading from Ephesians 1:15-23

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Here ends the lesson.

The Song of Simeon    Nunc Dimittis Luke 2:29-32 Lord, you now have set your servant free *     to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, *     whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, *     and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *     as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A reading from the gospel of St. Luke 24:44-53

Jesus said to his disciples, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you-- that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

Here ends the lesson.

The Song of Mary    Magnificat Luke 1:46-55 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *     for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: *     the Almighty has done great things for me,     and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him *     in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, *     he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *     and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, *     and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *     for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, *     to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *     as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty,     creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.     He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit       and born of the Virgin Mary.     He suffered under Pontius Pilate,       was crucified, died, and was buried.     He descended to the dead.     On the third day he rose again.     He ascended into heaven,       and is seated at the right hand of the Father.     He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,     the holy catholic Church,     the communion of saints,     the forgiveness of sins,     the resurrection of the body,     and the life everlasting. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving

Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. A Prayer of St. Chrysostom Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Then may be said Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. .

The Officiant may then conclude with one of the following The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.    2 Corinthians 13:14 May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Romans 15:13 Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.   Ephesians 3:20,21

Hymn 219

1 The Lord ascendeth up on high, the Lord hath triumphed gloriously, in power and might excelling; the grave and hell are captive led, see him return, our glorious Head, to his eternal dwelling.

2 The heavens with joy receive their Lord, by saints, by angel hosts adored; O day of exultation! Come earth, adore thy glorious King! His rising, his ascension sing with grateful adoration!

3 Our great High Priest hath gone before, now on his Church his grace to pour; and still his love he giveth: oh, may our hearts to him ascend; may all within us upward tend to him who ever liveth!
